Internal Bleaching
Internal Bleaching Treatment in Midtown West, NYC
A Simple, Non-Invasive Solution for A Beautiful, Natural Smile
If one tooth has turned gray, brown, or yellow after an injury or a root canal, you may have been told a crown or veneer is the only way to match it to the rest of your smile. Often, there is a treatment called Internal Bleaching that you can try first.
Internal bleaching lightens a darkened tooth from the inside, where the discoloration actually sits. It keeps your natural enamel, takes 3–4 brief visits, and is one of the most conservative ways to restore a single tooth's color.
Dr. Joyce Suh performs internal bleaching at our Hell's Kitchen office. For a single dark tooth, it's often one of the first options she considers before a crown or veneer. Many of our patients live or work nearby in Midtown West, Hudson Yards, and the Upper West Side.
Why Does a Single Tooth Turn Dark or Gray?
A tooth usually darkens from the inside after its nerve has been injured or removed. Common causes include:
Trauma: a knock to the tooth, sometimes years earlier, that caused bleeding inside the tooth or loss of the nerve
Root canal treatment: pigments from blood breakdown, or residue from root canal materials, staining the inner layer of the tooth
Older materials inside the tooth that discolor over time
Because the stain is inside the tooth, regular whitening can't reach it, but internal bleaching can.
How Internal Bleaching Works
Internal bleaching, sometimes called "walking bleach," places a whitening agent inside the tooth, right where the stain is.
A small opening is made in the back of the tooth, out of sight, to reach the inner chamber.
A protective seal is placed over the root canal filling.
A whitening agent is placed inside the tooth and sealed in with a temporary filling. It keeps working between visits.
The agent is refreshed at each visit as the tooth gradually lightens.
Once the shade has settled, the opening is closed with a tooth-colored filling matched to your result.
Treatment Process
-
Dr. Suh examines the tooth, takes x-rays, and confirms the root canal is healthy and well sealed. If the tooth hasn't had a root canal, she'll first check whether the nerve is still alive, because not every darkened tooth needs one.
-
Most cases take 3-4 visits of 5-15 minutes each, spaced several days apart. Dr. Suh checks the shade at every visit.
-
When the color is right, the small opening is sealed with a tooth-colored composite filling, invisible from the front.

FAQs About Internal Bleaching
-
Internal bleaching is a cosmetic treatment that lightens a tooth darkened from the inside, usually after trauma or a root canal. A whitening agent is placed inside the tooth, where the discoloration is, rather than on the outer surface. It is performed only on teeth that have had root canal treatment.
-
Usually not. Whitening systems like KöR work on the outer enamel of living teeth. A dark root canal treated tooth is stained from the inside, so it needs internal bleaching. Many patients do both: KöR Whitening for the overall smile and internal bleaching for the one tooth.
-
Most cases take 3–4 visits, each 5–15 minutes, spaced several days apart. Dr. Suh checks the shade at every visit and stops once the tooth reaches the right color.
-
A root canal treated tooth no longer has a living nerve, so most patients feel very little during treatment. Visits are brief and comfortable.
-
Most darkened teeth lighten noticeably. How closely the tooth matches depends on the cause and age of the stain, and Dr. Suh will give you a realistic expectation at your consultation.
-
It is a well-established treatment when done with the right precautions. Dr. Suh confirms the root canal is healthy before starting and places a protective seal over the root canal filling so the whitening agent stays where it belongs.
-
Results last for many years in most patients, though a treated tooth can gradually darken again over time. If it does, a touch-up is often possible.
-
-
Yes. If you'd like your whole smile brighter, we usually whiten the other teeth with KöR Whitening first, then bleach the dark tooth to match the new shade.

“I visited Dr Joyce Suh’s new practice Terra Dental after hearing that she had just opened up a new dental practice. I had an issue where two of my veneers were started to turn black because of a root canal treatment I had behind those teeth. I saw multiple dentists who recommended all sorts of solutions, ranging from veneer replacement (~$5K) to crowns (~$10K) and not fully covered by insurance due to this being a cosmetic treatment. Dr. Suh was very honest and suggested a much simpler and lower-cost solution to have my teeth bleached instead of replacing what I have. Within 3 days I already noticed a huge improvement and 3 weeks later my teeth literally look like new.
