Scaling & Root Planing
Periodontal Therapy in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC
Gentle, High-Quality Gum Disease Treatment
That Lasts
At Terra Dental, we take gum health seriously, because healthy gums are the foundation of a beautiful, lasting smile. If you’ve been told you need a “deep cleaning” or have signs of gum disease, we’re here to guide you through it with clarity, comfort, and care.
We treat periodontal disease with scaling and root planing (SRP): a precise, deep cleaning that removes buildup beneath the gums, helps the tissue heal, and prevents long-term damage to your teeth and bone.
Located in Hell’s Kitchen near Hudson Yards, we provide personalized periodontal therapy that’s thorough, gentle, and designed for lasting results.
What Is Scaling and Root Planing — and Why Do I Need It?
SRP (sometimes called a “deep cleaning”) is not the same as a regular cleaning. It’s a medical treatment for active gum disease, where bacteria have built up below the gumline and started to damage the bone around your teeth.
This buildup can’t be removed with regular brushing or hygiene visits. Left untreated, it can lead to:
Ongoing gum inflammation and bleeding
Gum recession and sensitivity
Bone loss around teeth
Loose teeth and eventual tooth loss
Higher risk of systemic issues like heart disease and diabetes
SRP removes harmful bacteria from below the gums and smooths the roots so the tissue can reattach and heal. It’s the first step toward stopping gum disease in its tracks.

Treatment Process
-
We perform a periodontal exam to assess your gum health, measure pocket depths, and take any needed x-rays.
-
We use local anesthesia to clean below the gums in one or more visits, removing plaque and tartar and smoothing the roots to help your gums heal. This usually takes 2 visits.
-
You’ll return for a follow-up to check healing and move into a customized cleaning schedule (usually every 3–4 months) to keep everything stable. Once periodontal disease is at bay, we’ll move you back to a 6-month cleaning schedule.
